Description
IRDX Core is a unique plugin that adds dynamic speaker behavior to guitar amp simulations and impulse responses (IRs). It is designed to be used after your amp sim or IR loader plugin, bringing a natural 3D sensation, movement, and unpredictability that is typically only achieved by recording a real guitar cabinet at high volumes. This is not an IR loader itself, but a tool to enhance existing ones.
What’s Wrong With Impulse Responses?
Impulse responses are excellent for capturing a static, linear image of a cabinet’s tone curve and resonances, but they lack the dynamic response of real speakers. Real speakers are living, moving, and non-linear, reacting dynamically to the input signal. IRDX faithfully emulates and adds these non-linearities to your amp sim or IR loader, making the sound more lifelike.
How Do I Use Irdx Core?
Simply insert the IRDX Core plugin immediately after an IR loader or a guitar amp simulation that includes a speaker cab model in your DAW. This works for any brand’s plugin, except for Bogren Digital’s own amp sims, as they already have the IRDX technology built-in.
Input Calibration And Pick A Style
In most cases, no adjustments are needed. However, you can use the automatic input calibration feature to ensure a healthy input level. IRDX Core also comes with two distinct modes: “Normal” and “Intense.” “Normal” provides subtle, natural speaker movement, compression, and distortion, while “Intense” offers a different flavor with more noticeable effects.
The Irdx Difference
The IRDX effect may seem subtle at first, but switching between enabled and bypassed states reveals significant differences. With IRDX Core disabled, the sound can be two-dimensional and lifeless. When activated, individual strokes are more discernible, the sound becomes more dynamic and realistic, and the guitar track gains width and excitement, helping it sit better in a mix.
The Future Of Speaker Modeling
Developed by producer Jens Bogren using advanced machine learning, IRDX (Impulse Response Dynamix) technology reconstructs the difference between a real cabinet and an impulse response. This process adds dynamic, true-to-life speaker behavior to static IRs. The result is a guitar amp sim that reacts like a real amp, fits well in a mix, and feels great to play. While IRs capture the tonal characteristics, they lack the dynamics of real speakers, which move air, compress, and break up based on the input from the amplifier.
