Description

Big Beautiful Door is a unique dynamics and equalization plugin that can process vocals, clean up noise, manage low end, gate drums, and more. It combines a gate with two equalizers and advanced sidechain capabilities, allowing you to equalize different parts of a sound separately. For example, you can cut harsh consonants only as they occur while bringing out air in vocals. It can also remove guitar-amp hiss, manage bass and kick frequencies, and add rhythmic movement to pads, achieving results that are difficult to get with multiple plugins.

Big Beautiful Door Cracking The Code

Big Beautiful Door was developed to achieve real-world audio goals that existing plugins couldn’t. It is not a gate, compressor, or dynamic EQ, but can act as all three. Its most unique feature is the ability to EQ opened and closed portions of a gated sound separately.

The Controls

The BBD has a threshold slider that controls the gate’s opening and closing levels. To prevent gate chatter, it has a 3dB hysteresis, with a variable control for additional adjustment. You can hide the EQ controls to display input-level history and envelope state, which helps with setting the threshold. Along with standard envelope controls (attack, release, hold, and ratio), the gate has a look-ahead feature. This opens the gate before the level crosses the threshold, allowing transients to pass unaffected, which is useful for gating drums.

Applications

Using its advanced side-chaining, Big Beautiful Door can EQ out the low end of a bass when a kick drum hits or attenuate the midrange of backing tracks when vocals come in, without needing automation. It can isolate and EQ consonants and vowels separately, making it a powerful vocal processor. It can eliminate sibilant buildup in background vocals while maintaining a natural sound and can boost highs without affecting sibilance. Additionally, it can clean up noisy guitars and low end, remove drum bleed, and add rhythmic and timbral interest to pads.
