Description

Retro Mix Legends uses Studio One’s Mix Engine FX and State-Space Modeling to bring the sounds of three classic analog consoles to your mix: Alpine Desk, Brit Console, and Porta Cassette. These tools can transform any mix with the tonality of classic albums from the 70s and 80s.

What’s A Mix Engine Effect?

Unlike traditional VSTs that affect one channel at a time, Mix Engine FX can be activated on any bus, including the Main, to cross-process all channels feeding that bus. This lateral cross-processing, combined with State Space Modeling, allows for the creation of natural, authentic digital models of analog equipment behavior, including drive, crosstalk, noise, saturation, and tape speed.

What Is State Space Modeling?

This technology creates digital models of analog circuits on a per-component level, including the specific non-linearity within components like transformers and vacuum tubes. This results in realistic digital models that capture the character of legendary analog hardware, making it accessible to more musicians and engineers.

Alpine Desk

Alpine Desk emulates a classic American recording console, adding warmth and punch to your mix. It features a variable output transformer with 1:1 and 3:1 gain ratios for different tonal contours. A two-stage Boost control allows for a range of tones from subtle coloration to serious overdrive.

Brit Console

Brit Console emulates two legendary British consoles from the 80s. It offers three Style options: Vintage for a smoother, top-end roll-off character; Super for an ultra-clean sound; and Modern, which provides access to the Harmonics control. The Harmonics control yields a gentle bass boost and can add nuanced second and third-order harmonic saturation or an edgy transistor bite. Like Alpine Desk, it also has a two-stage Boost control for a broad palette of tonal colors.

Porta Cassette

Porta Cassette faithfully reproduces the lo-fi sound of 80s and 90s four-track cassette recorders, perfect for creating lo-fi beats or nostalgic mixes. Its Character and Pitch controls manage tone coloration and tape wow and flutter for randomized detuning effects. The model even includes the hum generated by the power supply.
