Description

Colour Copy is a virtual analog delay effect inspired by classic bucket-brigade delays (BBD), enhanced with modern features. Named for its ability to deliver the characteristic coloration of classic BBD units, this plug-in originated from the “Lyrebird” delay unit built into Repro-1. Unlike typical digital delays that adjust buffer size, Colour Copy alters the internal sample rate, like a real BBD, ensuring smooth pitch modulation without glitches.

Colours

Colour Copy can capture the essence of a full range of classic BBD delays, from low-end rumbling to high-pitched resonant effects. A single knob smoothly blends between five pre-tuned “colour” macros. Each macro has its own unique noise, dynamics, and frequency loss characteristics. The Saturation knob controls how prominent these characteristics are, and a Brightness knob adjusts the bandwidth.

Flexibility

With delay times from under a millisecond to several seconds, Colour Copy can create a variety of effects, including comb-filter, flange, chorus, ping-pong, and looper effects. The routing options allow for mixing or swapping input and feedback signals and inverting the feedback phase. Unlike hardware BBD units, Colour Copy’s left and right output taps can be placed anywhere along the delay lines, enabling independent echo placement for various stereo effects.

Animation

The plug-in includes a stereo LFO that can modulate the delay rate, tap positions, or amplitude. The LFO’s range from 0.05Hz to 20Hz allows for chorus, vibrato, and tremolo effects. An envelope follower can modulate the LFO’s frequency and depth, adding dynamic effects. Colour Copy also has a ducking compressor with a unique twist: you can choose to duck the entire delay output or just the feedback signal, which preserves the initial delay and prevents sonic chaos from high regeneration.

Performance Control

Colour Copy enhances the performance features of BBD hardware. It includes a freeze button that loops the delay buffer’s contents. Additionally, MIDI key control allows you to “play” the delay like a mono synth, with each octave doubling the delay rate for creative pitch-shifting effects.
