Description
ResonHeart is a physical modeling simulation of a unique, experimental, aerophone-based acoustic instrument. This original machine, built on a complex model-based architecture, mimics sounds from various acoustic instrument families like winds, percussions, ethnic lutes, strings, and choirs. It can also produce unconventional, organic tones, evolving textures, and expressive motion pads.
Design as a real-world replicable machine, every component in ResonHeart, such as air pumps and pneumatic valves, is model after existing hardware. The surrounding room acoustics are also carefully simulated, offering a wide range of spatial environments from small chambers to large halls. ResonHeart features a clean and intuitive interface, making sound design simple and effective.
The Imitation Game
ResonHeart is a virtual instrument created using physical modeling techniques (ACS). It functions as a mechanical synthesizer with clockwork components, air pumps, motors, pneumatic valves, and complex resonator blocks. Each resonator block contains sixteen universal Helmholtz resonators, which can be individually triggered and tuned. This design allows ResonHeart to imitate a wide range of acoustic systems, including rigid-body or membrane-based percussions and cymbals, which are difficult to simulate.
With no electronic components in its sound generation process, ResonHeart is a mechanical synthesizer that can also mimic other acoustic instruments. Its simplified, single-view interface ensures all controls are easily accessible for a seamless sound design process. Users can control the pump motor, air turbulence, and the volume and aperture of the Helmholtz resonators, assigning different modulations to pneumatic valves. The instrument’s resonator blocks can be placed in an accurately modeled hall space to achieve expressive, organic, and evocative sounds that go beyond what ordinary electronic or acoustic instruments can do.
